Rowing Positions & Basic Terminology
The Cox directs the crew in the launching the skiff and embarking from the dock. Rowing commands are given by the Cox and after returning to the dock, the Cox supervises the retrieval of the skiff and its safe storage. All actions taken by the Cox are governed by the club's safety protocols.
Know what rowing position you have been assigned and whether you are on the port or starboard side (determined by the side your oar extends from) as the Cox may give prefix command with "Port Side" or "Starboard Side". You will be instructed to row in time with the Stroke, who sits immediately in front of the Cox.
The basic onboard commands are:
Sit up, ready to row, row - start rowing on the final part of this command "row"
Easy oars - stop rowing and keep you oar blade out of the water
Arms only - keep back straight and row at reduced power just moving your arms
